End of module self evaluation

Typeface Project Boards

Open publication - Free publishing - More boards

Mini Brief Specific evaluation
Throughout this brief I feel that I have development my typographic skills in the sense of physically making fonts a great deal, I now kind of respect the time and effort that goes into producing a typeface much more, it has also made me much more conscious of the small detail within a font and as a whole just made me more typographically aware.

I feel that my software skills have been challenged in the sense that I had to step up my level of accuracy and precision within illustrator.

I feel that I am now much more efficient in producing fonts or approaching the production of fonts and the fact that I might not choose to do another pure type driven brief I will take elements of this brief into future branding briefs to then apply what I have learnt here to the branding sector of the industry.

The negative area's of this project I would say were my project planning as I found myself rushing my fonts and then trying to focus on making deliverables for them, looking back I would of preferred to produce more fonts or more weights of a font and not of bothered to produce loads of variations of posters but just simply flush it on an image. I feel I wasted so much time on trying to deliver my font I lost precious time in developing my fonts to their full potential. If I had more time I would propose producing a wider font family for both my fonts and then also spend the time and start using fontographer as this would of brought up my efficiently and allowed me to make my fonts key able without starting over. One other weekness I found in this brief is my incapability to produce a purely typographical poster without disliking it, this might be due to the low content on my posters but this was a difficulty I struggled with. In future I would attempt typographic posters if I had a solid concept and content backing it.

One strength this project did have was it made me speak to other photographers within the college to get access to their photo's and helped build up networks for me.

Crits

Here are a range of my crits from this module, I decided to put them all in one post as their all relevant for all my projects. Crit feedback across this module has been help full to spot some errors within my work especially grammer. It has also helped to sort out concept problems and design problems that I have problems working out especially when I have been looking at the same thing for too long and end up missing simple errors. Refer to my folder for the rest of my crits, I have only uploaded the few crits I have received and then out of those I have only uploaded the ones which actually give me real feedback.

Just some of the many to do lists of OUGD301

This is just a select few of the many to do lists I have made across this module, I found that making daily to do lists and setting weekly goals it helped me to achieve the targets i needed to. Due to my severe dyslexia I find it incredibly hard to keep track of things to do so I find writing my daily to do list the night before then rewriting it as the day goes along seems to work. This makes these lists incredibly messy but in reality its me refering back to them and making constant notes relevant to that day.

More posters I made that I'm not intending on using...

Amstersans Posters

These are two posters I am proposing to print to show my amstersans stypeface, I decided not to go ahead and print as I do not have the money nor would I want to keep these after hand in.

Heres a poster For modern no5, The type sits really well with the image and I picked words which connote the typeface. I would like to print this poster but I do not have the money. Photography Thierry Sewell.

Type specimens

Type specimen test print

Add lines to keep consistency throughout the publication

Double check margins, bit tight against the line and against the over all page margin.

The size of the letters are huge and basically make the normal sized margins look tiny, doubling them is a good idea that way it wont be as pressed against the edge of the page.

School boy error. Overhang.

no lines....

Check spacings.

different front cover variations

I couldn't make up my mind on what cover to make for my type specimens so I made some grid related ones and tried a few variations on the layout.

feels unbalanced

yes

no.

really heavy black, makes the black the focus point not the grid.

needs to be more consistant with the rest of book.

Some more cover variations.

I made some with the actual typeface letterform on the from, these came out alright.

Book and fold out poster per typeface

Initially I had the idea to produce my type specimen book which has a poster attached to it. but then realised this is completely pointless... where would it be handed out and more importantly who ever got given it would be dissipointed. Nice idea for the future, but mayby with different content like a grid based book for type.

poster development...

Open publication - Free publishing - More amster

I had a lot of trouble getting these posters to work, they all just felt too empty and not complete, this has kind of made me realise that im a much more visual designer in the sense that I prefer using image as a primary over type. That and I did not have time to screen print these and they were looking really boring for digital print, nothing really interesting about them not even the process.

this has made me rethink the posters a bit and incorporating more image into them.

Poster Layout

just playing with some layout, but Thierry's photos are really solid, really brings the typeface up to a professional standard

First Draft of my type books for 2 of my typeface

Open publication - Free publishing - More modern no 5

After my crit with Andy he made it obvious to me that the covers on these looked a lot simular to my Aperture ones which I cant believe I hadn't noticed, must be the time/pressure getting to me a bit. But other then that, this is just a quick run through of some type specimen books I made. First draft anyway.

Sourced Photography for typeface - thierry sewell (Photography student)

been talking to a photographer who has let me kindly use some of his images for my project to put my typeface into context. Going to make some quick magazine covers with this and poster layouts

print and evaluation

Fold out posters to promote my typeface. Initially this was a great little idea but the problem with producing this is my typeface wasn't key able so it made working ridiculously slow and making any form of body copy practically impossible so I was limited to using a 2nd typeface for any writen body copy. As well as not really have a lot of content to put on the poser per typeface I kind of kept going and it resulted in me producing some horrible boring fold out posters which were basically just a piece of A3 folded down....

This poster felt cold, boring, plain, empty and reminded me of a street sign.

bad layout.

The inside of this poster was nice. but the folds ruined the integrality of the image.

Poster development

Rearrange to be opened portrait apposed to landscape.

place text to make the reader reorientate the poster portrait.

Printed the wrong way around, rearrange design to work.
