Typeface Project Boards

Mini Brief Specific evaluation
Throughout this brief I feel that I have development my typographic skills in the sense of physically making fonts a great deal, I now kind of respect the time and effort that goes into producing a typeface much more, it has also made me much more conscious of the small detail within a font and as a whole just made me more typographically aware.

I feel that my software skills have been challenged in the sense that I had to step up my level of accuracy and precision within illustrator.

I feel that I am now much more efficient in producing fonts or approaching the production of fonts and the fact that I might not choose to do another pure type driven brief I will take elements of this brief into future branding briefs to then apply what I have learnt here to the branding sector of the industry.

The negative area's of this project I would say were my project planning as I found myself rushing my fonts and then trying to focus on making deliverables for them, looking back I would of preferred to produce more fonts or more weights of a font and not of bothered to produce loads of variations of posters but just simply flush it on an image. I feel I wasted so much time on trying to deliver my font I lost precious time in developing my fonts to their full potential. If I had more time I would propose producing a wider font family for both my fonts and then also spend the time and start using fontographer as this would of brought up my efficiently and allowed me to make my fonts key able without starting over. One other weekness I found in this brief is my incapability to produce a purely typographical poster without disliking it, this might be due to the low content on my posters but this was a difficulty I struggled with. In future I would attempt typographic posters if I had a solid concept and content backing it.

One strength this project did have was it made me speak to other photographers within the college to get access to their photo's and helped build up networks for me.

Mini end of project self evaluation.

This brief has been one of my favourite of this module, It gave me content I loved working with, articles I could read again and processes I could spend all day on.

Editorial - I felt like layout skills in the terms of Image and Type have been pushed further then they ever have before especially concepts and idea's, it felt like my layout had a clear plan behind it and it and every design decision was backed up appropriately.

I feel that my approach to producing publications have changed a lot especailly as I feel much more informed about binding and stock this has allowed me to understand my content and steps to follow to present that content appropriately.

Binding/Stock - Major improvement and my understanding of digital print to stock has also improved. I understand the limitations of colour and stock when related to page numbers and how this can influence the production of a publication.

A strength in this project has definitely been my editorial work and layout, I will futher this within my final major project. I have also found a much more efficient way of sourcing material and improving my work efficiency.

A weakness I found was not having much of a knowledge about producing books but after this project and the extensive research undertaken I feel confident for future projects

If I had more time I would extend this brief and produce invitations, gallery signage and web/digital formats for my publication and promotion.

Mini end of project evaluation

Throughout this brief I feel that I have develop my screen printing skills considerably in a practical sense where I have to measure and line up prints as much as understanding the process much better for paper based printing.

I feel that I have also explored laser cutting as a process and now understand it much better, I would be confident in my FMP to book slots and utilize this to the best of its abilities next time. I feel that I understand the process' limitations much better as well and I could design for them.

I feel my branding and logo design skills have been tested by doing this brief in such a short time it forced me to really focus on my logo design and speed up my design process instead of spending weeks on a logo, this was a good exercise for me as it gave me confidence to be able to do a logo in a couple of days.

I feel that my concept for this project was really simple and clear and allowed my design to be done quickly due to the clarity of the project.

strengths throughout this project is my use of processes and type setting.

If I had more time I would definitely extend this brief into CD album covers, Gig posters, flyers, club signage and a web layout. I would also of not laser cut the logo like I did or tried to experiment of differnt vinyl stocks as I feel the drop out produced by the laser cutter was not very professional although the inside cover shining through really gives a good overall impact.

Mini end of project self evaluation

I feel that in this project for a start I learned so much. Screen printing is a major factor especially when it come to printing on fabrics apposed to paper, I have gotten an intimate knowledge of the process and its variables. As well as screen print talking to other creative photographers and professional printers has given me a greater knowledge of the professional world outside the studio. I feel that my promotional skills has also been tested getting to grips with social media platforms and keeping promotion on a page going.

Software wise I feel that I have gotten better one illustrator, photoshop and indesign.

Photography, I have gained a lot of confidence within my own set of photography skills although i have learnt that using a professional photographer for something as bit as this would make a project far less stressful but also give me less control on the images I use.

I also feel that I have started improving my skills as a director and organising a team of people in the terms of photography shoots and organising publications.

Editorial - My image heavy layout skills have gotten much better especially producing publications and designing for a purpose.

I have found a weakness of mine is branding but this is only when compared to matt, I feel that I can improve this within my next projects but working as a collaborative partnership I learnt a lot from matt and his work ethic with logo design.

A weakness for this brief has been time management, although everything got done this brief's printing side was so big it really influenced the rest of my projects and resulted in a lot of late nights.

If I had more time I would of extended this brief, printed far more of my photographic Tshirts and produced a full collatoral range for this project on the lines of stock books, letter heads ect.

Crits

Here are a range of my crits from this module, I decided to put them all in one post as their all relevant for all my projects. Crit feedback across this module has been help full to spot some errors within my work especially grammer. It has also helped to sort out concept problems and design problems that I have problems working out especially when I have been looking at the same thing for too long and end up missing simple errors. Refer to my folder for the rest of my crits, I have only uploaded the few crits I have received and then out of those I have only uploaded the ones which actually give me real feedback.

Just some of the many to do lists of OUGD301

This is just a select few of the many to do lists I have made across this module, I found that making daily to do lists and setting weekly goals it helped me to achieve the targets i needed to. Due to my severe dyslexia I find it incredibly hard to keep track of things to do so I find writing my daily to do list the night before then rewriting it as the day goes along seems to work. This makes these lists incredibly messy but in reality its me refering back to them and making constant notes relevant to that day.

More posters I made that I'm not intending on using...

Amstersans Posters

These are two posters I am proposing to print to show my amstersans stypeface, I decided not to go ahead and print as I do not have the money nor would I want to keep these after hand in.

Heres a poster For modern no5, The type sits really well with the image and I picked words which connote the typeface. I would like to print this poster but I do not have the money. Photography Thierry Sewell.

Laser Cut Fail

I decided that after just cutting full through my designs I was getting way too much letter drop out making the cover fairly illegible as a result, the laser cutter allowed a raster setting which cut's out my design by just rastering the first 0.2mm. This was probably one of the coolest things ive seen a laser do this year, seeing my design basically being embossed into card line by line.
The problem was the card was getting too hot and setting on fire in some area's burning the design but if it wasn't for this it would pretty much off embossed it.

Burning at the bottom and track marks on the side.

Black on black was far too dark to even really see that well face on.

burn marks bottom right.

Did not think this bottom right corner layer through very well. I knew it would happen but my layout didnt allow for this to change, tried some variations which avoided this but ended up looking silly.

From a distance it looks fairly alright but I just dont like the letters showing through  just feels badly considered as a piece of design.

Laser Cut covers

Wasting money

This is probably the worst thing i've made ever. Its kind of insulting to look at to be honest.
