Aperture bind tests

I decided to change a bind I found to my own publication's specifications. After no one down at vernon street could help me and their only advice was a print shop in york I decided to try out somehting I saw and adapt it. I had a load of perfect bound booklets then individual double pages. to get the bind right I basically Zig Zag bound it through but I had to have exactly 5 separate booklets to allow the zig zag to come in at the left top and leave at the bottom right. The publication consisted of two of these zig zag binds. The only problem with my bind was It had exposed bits of thread left over that I needed to trim and how ever little they were just about noticeable.

Imbalance - News paper articles

Some main articles I have been looking at for my imbalance ISTD brief. These all outline curruption within the south african government focussing on individuals like julius malema who has started to fraction the government whilst being involved with money laundering.

I am going to attempt to point out the imbalance of wealth and power within south africa Government, focussing on main party's involved and their influence on the country.

My projects will be fuelled by newspaper facts, articles and figures to give a non - bais overview of the situation, to be viewed by an audience of 1st world viewers to inform them about the corruption and imbalance of wealth in South Africa.

Cover change decision

I decided not to make a proper hard cover for this publication mainly because I felt that the type of publication reflected a load of articles and putting a single artist on the front would be bais, after my screen print of the cover failed, to follow the advice in my crits and keep the cover as the magazine itself and give it a belly band.

Printing publication.

Printing this publication was a nightmare to say the least but with my page layout guides which acted like a guide It was much simpler. I had to manually Work out my pagination manually and then feed each piece of A3 through then manually set up the next spread, flip the page and feed it through again.

It took me about two hours to print this booklet but it was worth it in the end.

My black and white decision allowed me to save a ton on money and therefore allowed me to spend more of my printing budget on the stocks I used throughout the publication.

Crit sheets

Cover Development Post Crit

After yesterdays crit it confirmed my previous worries about not having an image on the cover and that I had to incorporate photography. The problem was I did not want to be bais towards a single photograph across 60 years of the foundation. So what I did was take a set of images into photo and give them an aperture blur & half tone effect. This allowed me to play around and make the images not really as clear as they could be but mainly focusing on the light. I then overlaid them over each other and produced an image type collage. This has allowed me to produce a nice looking image for the cover while putting the focus on the type and most importantly not be bais towards a specific photographer.

Reworked cover "logo" I decided to drop the lines as said in crit they reflected a lot of nothing so realistically they aren't needed. I added the F stop sign in to reflect Aperture this is something I will be running throughout my magazine with the page numbering. This should be much more relevant to my photography audience as well.

Camera Symbols

The bottom row with white numbers show the values for the distance scale while the other numbers including the infinity sign show zoom position.

I wanted to use some of my research and try and incorporate some more photography elements into my layout, especially now that i know the bind and layout works. I wanted to explore some more symbols. After my crit today I realised that I have definitely neglected some of my photography side of the audience.

The Aperture values or F stops reflect the amount of light coming into camera. The lower the aperture the more you are able to actually blur around a specific subject the higher the aperture the more focused the subject.

Aperture mock up pages

Open publication - Free publishing - More app

These mock up pages were good as It mean I could just jump on indesign after getting my grids and layout ideas sorted then just do tons of pages and start paging through my publication as I was going allowing making sure it flowed well. It also allowed me to do a lot of layouts in a short space of time.

Aperture Typeface for cover

Initially I was producing a typeface for the front cover but It just didn't feel professional enough or fit the industry I wanted it to so kind of just scrapped it and suck to using a combination of my fonts to be used throughout my publication.

Publication Page Planning

These key references to my page booklet layouts and I had to manually know them to allow the printer to print my booklet, So I basically needed a printing instruction manual. Each booklet represented a colour stock.

Bit of Primary Sourcing of photography equipment and film

Open publication - Free publishing - More photos

I wanted to see if I could use some of the images after processing them in photoshop as light textured prints to fill my magazine pages but after some experimentation if figured it would go against the idea of trying to separate the type & image

Magazine Supplement Development and Test

Right... The Aperture Fall 2012 60th Anniversary supplement. After careful consideration I have started producing a Anniversary Supplement to go with the Fall 2012 Edition & given out at the auction/exhibition which happens to coincide with their birthday this October. I have gone through most of the magazine's and found my favourite headline articles that I feel reflect the magazine, this supplement is also geared to get more younger audiences involved with aperture.

The magazine is black and white other then the coloured stocks used, I found this a very useful way to make the magazine fit across the articles and it to some extent give it a feeling of age.

Stock
I have chosen to use Red stock for important Texts and Navigation. Why red? well red is suppose to signify the red lights in Dark rooms. This might be more relevant to photographers then designers. But it also gives a really nice contrast between normal pages.

I have chose off white 150 gms paper for the text, I prefer putting slightly off colours of paper for text because feels less harsh and easier to read, especially if you have large blocks of text flooding a page.

For the Image I decided to go for a crisp white card, putting as much focus on the single images as possible.

The variation between offwhite and white gives a good break between the text and image.

Scale
A3 Cut down, After wanting to produce an absolutely boss magazine from a A2 cut down I worked out that I'd have a sick magazine but i'd be poor as hell and if it didnt work It would be a massive waste of time and resources... So I scaled down to a A3 cut down per double which has worked out nicely.

Bind
I have broken up the book into a stich bind to allow the pages to fold flat so you can properly look at the photography. This has also allowed me to experiment with various coloured stocks within the book.

For now I have kept the cover basic, I am planning on screen printing or foiling the cover on either thick card to give the supplement some structure. Although this would make it harder to put in the post with the Fall 2012 magazine... so I might not and just keep it simple and foil it.

First page is a letter from the Chairman about the Aperture Foundation. The red stock should resemble a photography dark room and it also stands out superbly against the off white.

Context page's margins are a bit messed up, need to check this before next test print. The imagery underneath the main article flows onto the next page to resemble the article not being complete and moving onto the next page.

The balance between offwhite and white gives a nice separation between the content. I have used a combination of 2 typefaces to show the difference in conversation in the dialogue. Tons of leading to aid readability.

Simple, nothing to confuse the imagery.

I have now used the red stock to start the next article, because its only a small intro to the portfolio project, I decided to keep it off the imagery, this way the images can be viewed with no distraction.

The image brakes the bottom and right margins to show that the article is still flowing along. Large imagery.

Here I have actually constricted the imagery to allow it to symbolise the article being finished or complete.

Aperture Poster 60th Type Development

Header Font (Primary Font)

Champaign & Limousines

I have decided to use this for my header font as its a strong bold Sans serif font and sits well on its own especially in headings.

Garamond Font Family (Secondary Font)

The Garamond font family is a really good font to use especially in body copy, it has a small x height and allows a lot of text to sit in a small space. Another reason for selecting this font is it works really well with my primary font as a Sans Serif/Serif font combination.

Kabel (tertiary font)

Kable is a font produced around the time that Aperture was established, I decided to pick specific elements I really like from this font and work it in around my Header font, they are both bold fonts and fairly simular in structure which allows me to drop and drag in selected letters easily.
